Compatible, serviceable hardware.
Keep suitable hardware. Change the physical key that operates it. Rekeying starts with compatibility and the condition of the cylinder.

New access. Familiar hardware.Rekeying changes the key combination in a suitable cylinder so it works with a different physical key. It can be useful after a move, a change of occupants or an unaccounted-for spare. It is not the same as changing a keypad code, revoking an electronic credential or replacing the entire lock assembly.
Describe whether the key turns smoothly, the latch operates normally and the door closes properly. A compatible cylinder in serviceable condition may be suitable to retain. Damage, wear or a different desired function can change the recommendation. Rekeying is not a repair for a mechanism that binds or a door that does not align with its frame.
Make a list of the entrances to include and how many new keys you need. Mention any side or garage entry and whether you hope to use one key for several doors. That arrangement depends on compatibility; different keyways may not work together. For a managed building, establish whether a master or restricted system affects the available options.
If a door also has a keypad or a connected account, include those in a separate access review. An old garage remote, a building credential or a key to a different door is not automatically affected by rekeying one lock. Define the outcome you want rather than assuming one change handles every way into the property.
State the number of cylinders, their known condition and who authorizes the work. Ask how the estimate handles additional keys, parts and any unsuitable hardware discovered during inspection. Confirm availability for the address and agree on changes before extra work begins.
Not in every situation. Ask for an estimate based on the actual cylinder, condition, scope and any parts required.
Often the existing exterior hardware can remain if it is compatible and suitable. Confirm this for the particular lock.
